The 70's through 90's were dominated by the likes of Paul Johnson, Moitessier, Wharram, Annie Hill, Nick Skeates, and many more - vagabonds with larger than life personalities who seemed ( and were) wholly unable to live on land. It's an art film, more than a documentary.įor me, I think the film really aced capturing the essence of how the past decade has seen the closing of the old "boomer" cruising era and the beginning of the "Influencer" era, and I took great pleasure in an unintended contrast between the subject and modern sailing icons. There are no long informational monologues about the mans life, his successes or his failures, but instead long well-framed shots of his failing body as he thinks about matters. This is a good film, it's also a film which is deeply hard to watch due to the degree with which the filmmakers have pursued what I can only describe as " distilled poignancy". Now staring down his 90th decade from the bottom of a bottle, estranged from his family for decades, and stranded in the backwater of Carriacou aboard a rotting unseaworthy example of his crowning glory the Venus 42 - for which he claims to have invented the method of Airex core hull lamination. Such is the question posed by " The Sailor": a 2021 film about the final days of Paul Erling Johnson, a firebrand in the yacht design world of the seventies and eighties who refused to live a life fettered by society. What happens to old sailors? Not the casual type, the ones who dally with a circumnavigation or two and then return to a life on land, but rather the ones who appear possessed by a different spirit and dedicate their entire lives to the pursuit of the sea?
